This year we are honoring our 2020 winners along with our 2021 winners:
H. B. McDaniel Hall of Fame Awards
Class of 2020
Dr. Laura Smillie Heid
Laura joined the Counseling Department at Saint Mary’s College of California in 1988. Serving as the department’s Program Director for 8 years and taking on multiple roles to support the numerous specializations, Laura has been an integral part of the success of the counseling program at SMC for over 30 years! Laura has taught several courses in the department— from the introductory personal and professional development course to the culminating field work seminars for school counseling, MFT, and PCC students. As a counselor educator, Laura’s commitment to her students and enthusiasm for teaching is unyielding.
Posthumously Awarded to Dr. Mary T. Parish
Mary’s career as a practitioner largely centered around her work with people who were diagnosed with HIV or with AIDS in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. A staunch advocate for this population, Mary was especially dedicated to this work. Becoming a counselor educator, Mary furthered her career. She worked in the Counseling Department at Saint Mary’s College of California until her retirement in 2012. Mary directed the Marriage & Family Therapy program, was instrumental in helping to strengthen the school counseling program, and served as the Associate Dean for the School of Education.
Marcia has worked as a K-12 educator, a school counselor, and a counselor educator for over 35 years in the Clovis Unified School District in Fresno County. She has also been a mainstay for the National University PPS Program, serving graduate students in the Central Valley as professor and field experience supervisor. Marcia was often the first and final contact for National’s PPS School Counselor graduates. Every year, the San Joaquin School Counselor Association could depend on Marcia to help organize (and often to initiate) plans for professional development opportunities. She was instrumental in connecting the SJCA with speakers on topics important to the role of the school counselor. To her colleagues and her students, Marcia’s dedication and contributions to the PPS School Counseling profession are profound.

Class of 2021
Mrs. Myrna Harp
Myrna Harp is a school counselor at Marina Village Middle School in the Rescue Unified School District located in El Dorado Hills, CA where she has served in said capacity for 17 years. Her unwavering dedication in working with students as a school counselor has earned her both state and national accolades. Mryna received the School Counselor of the Year award from the CA Association of School Counselors in 2014-2015 and was a Semi-Finalist for the American School Counselor Association’s School Counselor of the Year award. Myrna has put her dedication in action by writing a grant to build a community-counseling center in an elementary school in North Sacramento and will soon market a game called “Truth or Dare for School Counseling” encouraging student participation, teaching risk taking, self-control, and more. Myrna has proven time and again that she is indeed a remarkable individual!
Dr. Xiaolu Hu
Nomination letter attached
The nominee form Aubrey and her colleagues in the Department of Counselor Education at San Jose State University is Dr. Xiaolu Hu to the HoF for 2021. Xiaolu is bridging toward retirement so we thought that it would be a nice surprise if she is inducted into the HoF. She has been at SJSU for 30+ years (was actually the first woman in the department). Also, she presented with our very own John Krumboltz in China.
Class of 2021 Scholarships and Grants
To honor the legacy of educational excellence, leadership, and service of H. B. McDaniel, in addition to presenting the Dale C. Burklund Research Fellowship and the James William Allen School Counselor Service Scholarship to Masters candidates in school counseling, we also will present the John D. Krumboltz Memorial Career Development Grant to a practicing school counselor. This grant aims to honor the planned and unplanned learning experiences that characterize the career trajectory of a school counselor, encourage lifelong learning, and inspire practitioner research.
